Eskom’s system operator (SO) cautions that the impact of renewables on the power system must be carefully studied to assess the grid’s supply-and-demand balancing challenges.

Eskom plans to build a new pumped storage scheme in the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality in Groblersdal in Limpopo through the public-private partnership (PPP) model. This comes against the backdrop of an increasing number of coal-fired power stations that supply base-load energy that will be decommissioned in the next few years.

Eskom’s system operator (SO) cautions that the impact of renewables on the power system must be carefully studied to assess the grid’s supply and demand balancing challenges. Eskom estimates the total generation capacity of installed rooftop capacity at 6 141MW, almost as much as the total installed capacity of all other renewables.
