It is reported that Morocco’s agricultural products have witnessed a surge in demand from the countries of Northern Europe and North America due to the corona 19 health crisis faced by producing countries of southern Europe – Spain, Italy, and Portugal. The president of the Association of Producers and Exporters of Fruits and Vegetables (APEFEL), Lahcen Aderdour, said that COVID 19 has led to a drastic fall in Spain’s fruit and vegetable production. The demand for products such as tomato, zucchini, pepper, eggplant and citrus fruit from Morocco has registered steep growth. At the same time, the prices of Moroccan fruits and vegetables, in some cases have gone up to 30%.
The highest demand in Europe came from Germany, France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom. The United States and Canada, who are major consumers of Spanish fruits also have turned to Morocco to meet the demand. However, the challenge is logistics, as many carriers refuse to cross Spain for fear of contagion, which is increasing transportation costs.
