CMA CGM has announced plans to take on a third port venture in Morocco, one of Africa’s fastest-growing container destinations. CMA CGM has signed with Moroccan port and terminal operator Marsa Maroc to operate half of the new east terminal at Nador West Med Port, a facility in the country’s far northeast that will have a 1.2m teu capacity when fully equipped.

Through this joint venture with Marsa Maroc, the CMA CGM Group will equip and operate for 25 years a 750-meter section of the quay and 35 hectares within the Nador West Med container terminal. This joint venture, in which CMA CGM and Marsa Maroc will hold 49% and 51% respectively, will equip and operate 50% of the Nador West Med container terminal, i.e. 35 hectares of container yard and 750 meters of quay with a maximum draught of 18 meters.

With four container terminals now in operation at the almost fully built-out Tanger Med port, today the largest container terminal in the Med, Morocco is trying to replicate Tanger’s success story with Nador West Med port as a second West Med hub some 250 km east. CMA CGM already has terminal interests at Eurogate Tanger and Somaport in Casablanca.
