reports that Jumia had truncated or shut its operations in some parts
of Africa
Jumia, the Nigerian headquartered e-commerce company, which has a
Pan-African operations has pledged its digital retail network to curb
the spread of COVID-19. Jumia has operations in 11 African countries
and is adjudged as one of the largest e-commerce and digital payment
companies in Africa.
Jumia has undertaken to donate certified face masks to health
ministries in Kenya, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Nigeria and Uganda. It will
be sourcing its goods from outside Africa. Of late, there were
reports that Jumia had truncated or shut its operations in some parts
of Africa. There were reports about the liquidity crunch being faced
by the e-commerce company.
Jumia’s involvement in the health space of Africa is watched with
considerable interest since the presence of the private sector in that
domain is very limited in the continent. The company has offered to
the governments in the continent to use its last-mile delivery network
for distribution of supplies to hospitals and workers. Jumia has
announced that it would reduce charges on its JumiaPay finance product
to facilitate people using digital platform to transact so as to
reduce people- to -people contacts, which can be a possible conduit
for the spread of the virus.
