Already 35 out of 53 land entry points have been closed. The measure to build the fences is to strengthen the closure of the land entry. The planned fence is to be erected on either side of the Beitbridge Land Port of Entry, to ensure that no undocumented or infected persons cross into the country.

South Africa has long been struggling to cut illegal immigration from Zimbabwe, which is seen as a threat to local jobs. The unemployment rate in South Africa is estimate around 30 percent. The government is also taking stringent measures to check panic buying.
