Mozambique’s Minister of Industry and Commerce, Silvino Moreno, who was in Lilongwe to sign the agreement, called it another step forward in diplomatic and commercial relations with Malawi, a strategic business development partner.
Mozambique and Malawi have signed an agreement to simplify procedures, facilitate the flow of cross-border trade, and consequently increase trade volumes between the two countries, recently. Now, both countries can trade 47 products, agricultural and manufactured, without paying customs duties, which are valued up to USD 1,000.
This decision has been taken and the agreement signed after a long winding discussions over three years or so. Experts from both countries were at it during this time. Many a time, the discussions were deadlocked due to stiff stands taken by both countries.

It may be recalled that at the 32nd meeting of the SADC Council of Trade Ministers, the Member States resolved to engage in negotiations towards the implementation of a simplified regional trade regime. It is expected that bilateral and multilateral trade negotiations and easing of trade barriers may help in enhancing the intra-trade of the SADC.
In the meantime, the visiting minister said that Mozambique remained attractive to foreign direct investment (FDI), given its potential. He made this statement while addressing a meeting with Malawi businessmen.
