The Ministry of Health, Rwanda has fined 44 companies for price
gouging in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. They were also booked
under hoarding of critical items to extort more money from the hapless
needy people. In Kigali alone, delinquent businessmen have been fined
to the tune of 3.81 million Rwandan Francs.
The fines were imposed mostly for raising prices of some food
products, intentional use of unapproved weighing scales, issuance of
illegal invoices and for selling sub-standard manufactured items. The
government sources said that the punitive measures were taken for
increasing the prices of goods where there are price controls imposed
by the government. However, the officials said strict actions were
taken against people who were hoarding essential food items to
artificially jack up the prices by creating scarcity.
It is reported in some sections of the media that some other countries
like Uganda are also contemplating actions on the similar lines.
