UN officials have warned that as the digital world continues to transform, developing regions are at risk of being left behind. The UN Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development, Navid Hanif, said there were still regional disparities in digitization, although there has been progress in bridging the digital divide. Hanif said that 1.37 billion people remain on the wrong side of the digital divide.

Poor digital connectivity is the main reason for the lack of pick-up of digitization in Africa. Even here, there are wide disparities between the nations. For instance, countries like Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, etc have higher internet penetration as compared to countries in Central and West Africa.
