China Calls on Eswatini to Snap Diplomatic Relations with Taiwan

(3 Minutes Read)

China has long regarded the self-ruled Taiwan as a reneged province that has no right to establish diplomatic relations with other sovereign states.

China’s foreign ministry called on Eswatini, the sole diplomat mission of Taiwan in Africa, to recognize the trend and “make correct decisions.” Eswatini is the only African country absent from the 2024 Summit of the Forum of China-Africa Cooperation that is being held in Beijing this week.

Joined by representatives from 53 African countries and other regional and international organizations, the summit is expected to adopt an action plan for the two sides to further strengthen cooperation in global governance, security, trade and investment in the next three years. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told reporters that it was not in Eswatini’s interest to develop official diplomatic relations with the Taiwan region.

China has long regarded the self-ruled Taiwan as a reneged province that has no right to establish diplomatic relations with other sovereign states. Although not an independent country, Taiwan is nonetheless a thriving democracy that still retains diplomatic ties with 15 countries around the world. China, for its part, asserts that Taiwan is a renegade province that is inseparable from the Mainland. The Taiwan-China divide remains among the most contentious geopolitical issues in Asia and considered to be among Beijing’s highest foreign policy priorities.

South Africa was the last major African country to switch its diplomatic allegiance from Taipei to Beijing back in 1994. Since then, the Chinese managed to use the promise of lucrative investment in those countries.
