President Suluhu while taking a ride to officially open the line remarked that the railway line would be a game-changer
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan inaugurated a new rail line between Dar es Salaam and the main business hub Dodoma, its administrative capital, on 1 August.
Turkish company Yapi Merkezi built the 541km line for US$3.1bn. The trains running on the line standard gauge use electric power. The railways networks built during the colonial times are on Cape gauge. That is true in most of the African countries.
The journey time between the two stations is less than four hours as against double the time taken in bus or cars. President Suluhu while taking a ride to open the line officially remarked that the railway line would be a game changer. Although the inaugural service was delayed by a few hours due to technical problems, his mood was cheerful because of the much-awaited standard gauge rail track.

Tanzanian Railways has a plan to expand the standard railway network. It is building a new route between Dodoma and Tabora. From there, the railway will split into two branches: one running north to Mwanza, the other further west to Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika, near the Burundi border.
