The overall market capitalization (turnover of the stock exchange) of
Central Africa is nearly US$ 420 million. The slowdown was experienced
despite the creation of Central African Stock Exchange, which
otherwise should have increased the market capitalization by way of
increasing the velocity of transaction of the equities and bonds.
The decision regarding the single financial market was taken by the
CEMAC heads of state and came into force in July 2019. In March,
there will be a review meeting of the stakeholders to take stock of
the progress of the stock market.
Financial market in the central African countries is relatively
underdeveloped. Two stock exchanges Douala in Cameroon and Libreville
in Gabon were the only two stock markets functioning very well on a
rather limited space. These two stock exchanges were merged to form a
single entity. However, the functioning of the merged entity is not up
to the satisfactory level. What would be the final decision at eh
heads of states of the central African countries would decide the
future of the stock exchange.
