Hosni Mubarak, former Egypt’s president for almost 30 years has died in a Cairo hospital at the age of 91.
Mubarak became Egypt’s fourth president in 1981 until he was ousted during the Arab Spring revolution. After the Arb Spring, he was jailed for years by freed and acquitted of most charges in 2017.Some of the charges levelled against him included conspiracy to murder the demonstrators during the public protests against his regime, diversion of public funds, nepotism etc. He was arrested in April 2011, and spent nearly six years in jail and hospitals.
Egypt’s presidency expressed condolences to his family by stating that he was a “military leader and war hero”. However, some media reports called him a controversial statesman whose tenure was characterized by corruption, police brutality, political repression, and plunged Egypt into economic problems. He is also held responsible for allowing for the current military regime to continue ruling.
Mubarak was vice president on October 14, 1981, when President Anwar Sadat was assassinated and later was sworn in as president, promising continuity and order. During his Presidency, Mubarak was a strong ally of the United States and Israel. Over the years, Mubarak tinkered with reform but resisted any significant change. He claimed himself as Egypt’s sole protection against militancy and sectarian division.
