The event’s objective was to bring together a diversity of key players in the maritime sector sharing a common vision including the Djiboutian authorities as well as regional organizations and international partners.

The Djibouti Regional Training Center (DRTC), the Delegation of the European Union to Djibouti and IGAD, and the Embassy of Japan in Djibouti jointly organized a symposium entitled “Ensuring Maritime Security in the Red Sea” recently.

The event’s objective was to bring together a diversity of key players in the maritime sector sharing a common vision including the Djiboutian authorities as well as regional organizations and international partners. The effort is to deepen focus on the challenges facing Djibouti and the Red Sea region in terms of maritime security.

It is also a question of stepping up efforts to better preserve security in this particularly busy maritime route by managing to prevent potential threats including piracy, terrorism, and illegal activities. The various parties brought together within the framework of this symposium had the mission of drawing up an inventory of international efforts undertaken in the maritime domain while exploring at the same time the avenues of strengthening partnerships to better ensure freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.

In her opening speech, the Director General of Djibouti Regional Training Centre (DRTC) welcomed the participants and key players in the maritime sector. She also thanked the organizers, in particular the EU Ambassador and the Japanese Ambassador to Djibouti for their commitment and vision.

This symposium is expected to serve as a platform that can provide the essential elements needed to design potential concrete strategies aimed at enhancing freedom of movement in the Red Sea waters.
