Tunisian Elections: Abir Moussi, Declares Candidacy for Presidency from Prison

(3 Minutes Read)

Abir Moussi will run in the presidential election on October 6th in Tunisia from prison. The Free Destourian Party announced that their president, presently in jail awaiting trial, will indeed campaign. She has already been imprisoned since October 2023 for charges of inciting citizens to arm against each other and provocation and disorder in Tunisian.

Abir Moussi is the first declared candidate with a substantial popular base. A poll earlier this year even placed her in second position behind Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed. Moussi can count on the Free Destourian Party, which has a widespread presence across the country and a disciplined base of activists.

Abir Moussi, who has long been one of the fiercest opponents of Kaïs Saïed, refused to engage in elections until now. This gradual change to more and more of a presidential regime has changed that calculation, according to a member of the party’s political bureau, she is running for the presidency because, in this country, nothing gets done outside the presidency under the current rules.

The party members are apprehensive that their government officials will even allow Abir Moussi on the ballot: They believe that if the authorities want to present a positive image of Tunisia and themselves, they should accept Abir Moussi’s candidacy. If not, then everyone would understand something is wrong in Tunisia. The electoral commission is expected to announce the final list of candidates on 3rd September.
