Turkey eyes road construction projects in Nigeria

A Turkish delegation led by Minister of Trade, Rushar Pekan was in Nigeria to scout for more opportunities in trade particularly in road construction and engineering sector. The Minister disclosed that the purpose of the visit was to seek increased collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing of Nigeria. During a courtesy call on the Minister of Works and Housing, of Nigeria, she added that in terms of size and potential, Turkey regarded Nigeria as one of the most important business partners in Africa. She added that given Turkey’s proven experience and expertise, road construction and engineering sector offered huge potential for collaboration between the two countries and urged the ministry to consider Turkish investors in the identified sectors.

Responding, to her statement, the Minister of State for Works and Housing, Abubakar Aliyu, agreed that there was scope for more collaboration between Nigeria and Turkey since both have common development goals. He pointed out that there was a need to share knowledge in technological investment particularly in engineering design and construction. The bilateral discussions have led to some significant outcomes. The Federal Government of Nigeria has finalised certain proposals with the government of Turkey for the development of Greenfield and Brownfield projects in strategic locations in Nigeria. Further, both the sides have agreed to collaborate on the construction of mass affordable housing in selected city centres, capacity development and mentoring for Public-Private Partnership officials, etc.
