Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso seeks re-election

Congolese President Denis Sassou Nguesso will  run again for the top job in 2021. He has served   the central African country for a total of 35 years, spanning over two terms. Significantly, his re-election in 2016 sparked violence.  Congo has five million people and most of them live below the poverty line despite huge oil reserves the country commands.

Denis Sassou Nguesso (76) was elected as the President of the Republic of Congo in 1997. He served two terms as the president: the first from 1979 to 1992. After a lapse of five years, he again became the President in 2002 and since has been serving as the president. Sassou Nguesso is backed by a variety of political parties, most importantly the PCT. He is the President of the PCT Central Committee.
