Bamboo cultivation in Tanzania has two positive spinoffs. Foremost it helps the country to maintain ecological balance by adding to carbon credit and two, boosting the export earnings since, of late, its demand has considerably gone up from countries like China.

Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism of Tanzania, Angellah Kairuki launched the National Bamboo Development Strategy and Action Plan for 2023-2031 recently to boost bamboo production in the country. The East African country is increasingly expanding the acreage of cultivation of bamboo as a strategy to decrease carbon emissions while simultaneously boosting the production of high-quality furniture for export. Bamboo and its products have a total global market of USD 7 billion. Bamboo has high demand in China and other countries where it is massively used for furniture.

During the launch of the Bamboo Development Strategy, Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Angellah Kairuki, said bamboo could reduce carbon emissions by 40%.  She added that the implementation of the bamboo strategy will help reduce the effects of climate change and soil erosion.

About 2.5 billion people in Asia, Africa, and South America use bamboo materials to manufacture products valued at USD 7 billion annually. Kairuki said that through more production of bamboo, the country will be able to earn taxes and increase foreign currency, besides creating a new value chain, employment, and income for farmers and other stakeholders. She revealed that the government was looking at expanding the forest cover in the country, which was losing approximately 469,000 hectares of forest area every year.

Bamboo is useful for making furniture.  The Tanzanian government was looking at orienting the citizens on how they could benefit from the product.

Countries like China are currently selling carbon through the bamboo crop; Tanzania can also enter the market because it does not take long to grow, and it takes five years, unlike the others, which take up to 100 years.
