The defence and foreign affairs ministers from Mali and Niger met their counterparts in Burkina Faso’s capital recently to discuss the roadmap of forming a tri-state confederation.
Defence ministers have cleared a joint commitment to withdraw from ECOWAS without delay and continue cooperation under the Alliance (AES), which was formed last September. The ministers also discussed the broad contours of the proposed three-nation confederation.

The three ministers also reaffirmed their decision to continue cooperation under the Alliance, formed last September, which, if implemented, can give a body bow to ECOWAS. The immediate reason cited by them for the speedy withdrawal from the economic group is the sanctions imposed on the three countries by ECOWAS, which they termed as illegitimate, inhumane, and irresponsible. sanctions imposed on them by ECOWAS.
