Blinken during his discussions with Tinubu highlighted the role Nigeria should play in Africa to strengthen democracy in order to shape the future course of world politics as the largest country and largest economy in the region.

Nigeria’s Foreign minister Yusuf Tuggar while welcoming US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that his visit would enhance trade relations between the two countries and would deepen democracy in West Africa. Importantly, Blinken met Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and held discussions with him.

Blinken during his discussions with Tinubu highlighted the role Nigeria should play in Africa to strengthen democracy in order to shape the future course of world politics as the largest country and largest economy in the region. He also said that both the US and Nigeria were doing a lot of work to drive the future of the world in a positive direction, particularly in climate action. As partners in the Global Methane Coalition, both countries, he said, were pushing for permanent representation of African voices in the U.N. Security Council.  The United States, he said, was committed to strengthening genuine partnerships on the continent, to work towards solving shared challenges, and also to deliver on the promise and the fundamental aspirations of the peoples.

www.trendsnafrica.com has been reporting about Blinken’s four-nation tour to Africa, coming immediately after the visit of the Chinese foreign minister. The South-South Cooperation meeting, where China plays an important role in rallying the developing countries, just concluded at Kampala, Uganda with a clarion call to strengthen the cooperation among the member countries.  Blinken, as the last – leg of the present trip, will go from Nigeria to Angola, considered as a close ally of the US in particular and the Western countries in general.

Diplomatic circles feel that Blinken’s visit may be a prelude to the long-awaited President Biden’s visit to Africa to further cement the cooperation. Biden though he promised to visit the continent much earlier could not do so because of his other preoccupations such as the conflict of Russia and Ukraine, and now the Palestine -Israel conflict. Another round of speculation is that Joe Biden can no longer afford to postpone his trip to the continent because of the next presidential elections, where he would try to get re-elected. African Americans form a considerable percentage of the US population, who can tilt the decision either way.
