World Bank-IMF support for Ethiopia

Abiy Ahmed, Prime Minister of Ethiopia, has revealed that the International Monetary Fund has agreed to extend financial assistance of USD 2.9 billion to Ethiopia to support the implementation of the recently launched domestic economic reforms.  Meanwhile, The International Monetary Fund is also in the process of approving a USD 3 billion loan for Ethiopia. Announcing this, Eyob Tekalign Tolina, the State Minister of Ethiopia’s Ministry of Finance disclosed that Ethiopia will receive total assistance of USD 6 billion  together from World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to support the Ethiopian government’s economic reforms.

Additionally, an amount of USD 150 million was approved by World Bank for the construction of the state-of-the-art biosafety level lab in Ethiopia. The fund will be used by Ethiopian Public Health Institute to equip 15 BSL II lab in all regions and existing 8 regional labs. Announcing the world bank support, Minister of Health, Dr Amir Aman, said that the fund will also be used to strengthen national public health emergency management and national and regional data management systems, among others.
