Tanzanian Tobacco Company AOTTL Makes Timely Payments to Gowers in Dollar to Comply with Government Direction

Tanzania’s Alliance One Tobacco Tanzania Limited (AOTTL) has paid US$71.9 million (about Sh179.8 billion) to more than 12,000 contracted growers who delivered the produce to the company during this year’s season

Tanzania’s Alliance One Tobacco Tanzania Limited (AOTTL) has paid US$71.9 million (about Sh179.8 billion) to more than 12,000 contracted growers who delivered the produce to the company during this year’s season.

The company’s managing director, Mr Ephraim Mapoore, said the payments complied with the government’s directive to pay the farmers in dollars. Tobacco firms pay Sh179.8 billion to contracted growers in the 2023 season. The payments were in line with the government’s directive to pay farmers in dollars.

Importantly, the company recently received the 17th Manufacturer of the Year Award in the category of large tobacco processing industries. Tobacco production is one of the mainstays of the farmers of the East African country. Many farmers are resorting to the cultivation of alternate crops on account of sluggish demand for tobacco in the international market due to its health hazards.
