International NGOs working in Niger called on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to ease its sanctions against Niamey to facilitate emergency humanitarian aid to enter from neighboring Benin.
Organizations numbering over 20, have called for the immediate reopening of the border with Benin, which has been blocked because of regional sanctions. They asserted that more than 4.3 million people need urgent assistance. ECOWAS maintained the economic and financial sanctions imposed on Niger after the coup d’état on 26 July. ECOWAS is insisting on a short transition, which is resisted by the military junta.

The NGOs that petitioned ECOWAS included Oxfam, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), and Médecins du Monde. They called for immediate opening of the border between Benin and Niger to carry out humanitarian aid. More than 2 million people faced food insecurity between October and December 2023, denying 15% of the population access to food or assistance.
