Of nearly 25 million people in need in war-torn Sudan, the United Nations has only been able to reach a fraction, according to the head of the UN’s humanitarian response. Even assistance to that few may stop soon because of a severe lack of funds, according to Clementine Nkweta-Salami, the UN Representative and Coordinator for Humanitarian Works.
Eight months into a conflict between rival generals that has torn the country apart, the situation, the UN representative said was catastrophic. The lingering fight between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, made life miserable for ordinary people, who have been living in abject poverty depending on support from multilateral agencies.

The conflict has taken a toll on more than 12,190 people in the brutal struggle for power. Many feel the causalities counted as most conservative and the real incidences of death may be higher. Parts of the country are completely cut off from the world. Close to 24.7 million people need humanitarian assistance. So far, only four million can be reached, while the goal set is to reach out to 18 million people.
