Rwanda is unveiling a number of projects to increase the production and productivity of its small farmers by inducting technology. The project, which combines AI and IoT, aims to empower smallholder farmers by detecting crop diseases and providing locally sensitive agricultural advice. It is ideally suited to farmers having limited resources. The project, which is at a testing stage, welcomes user feedback and plans to launch in December. Agriculture and AI experts are being consulted extensively while developing the project.

Mkulima GPT focuses on local languages and seeks to expand services to more African languages. To facilitate accessibility, ‘Mkulima GPT’ has already established an online presence through a dedicated interactive website and a WhatsApp phone number where farmers can ask queries that cover a wide range of topics, including farm preparation, maize disease management, and post-harvest procedures.
