The Congolese Government has denied reports about a coup attempt against President Denis Nguesso. He has been in power for 38 years.

Earlier, there were reports about the coup in the country when the president was away at a state visit to the US. Denial of the coup has come from Congo’s Minister of Information Thierry Moungalla, who tweeted on his X handle. He wrote on social media that the Government denied the news as fake. He also reassured people to maintain calm and exhorted people to go about doing their activities.

President Nguesso, 78, has spent 38 years at the helm of the country in central Africa. He was president from 1979 to 1992, then returned in 1997 after a civil war, and has remained in power ever since.  There has been a wave of coups across Africa with the most recent one in Gabon where the military seized power in the Central African nation.

Recently, the Sahel region has witnessed a spate of coups, destabilizing the democratically elected government. DRC has been in the grip of internal disturbances, allegedly let loose by M23 Group, which the DRC authorities claim is supported by neighboring Rwanda, which it denies vehemently. There are also similar claims from the US and UN about the precipitative role being played by Rwanda. The mineral-rich DRC has been on the radar of a number of vested interests. Among them is Wagner of Russia, who is reported to be present in the country in the guise of a trainer. www.trendsnafrica.com  will bring updates as and when developments unfold.
