His supporters were wearing red caps, the colour of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), the party of Weah, a former international football star who has turned to politics. He was elected president in 2017 and took office in 2018 for a six-year term.

President Weah faces 19 rivals including Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s former vice-president, Joseph Boakai (2006-2018), businessman and party leader Alexander Cummings and human rights lawyer Taiwan Gongloe. There are 46 accredited parties and more than 2.4 million voters, who are registered for the presidential and legislative elections to choose 73 members of parliament and 15 senators out of the country’s 30 senators.

Liberia is a country of five million people and was ravaged by the outbreak of Ebola epidemics and the Covid-19 pandemic. Around half of Liberians live on less than US$1.90 a day, according to the World Bank. Weah came to the presidency promising to create jobs and invest in education, which is still remaining on the wish list in the impoverished West African country.
