Kenyan national Peter Ndegwa become CEO of Safaricom, scotching the speculation that a non-Kenyan may be appointed to the coveted post.
The announcement is the culmination of a lengthy search and widespread speculation over the firm’s next successor, following the death of its former CEO, legendry Bob Collymore. Ndegwa will assume office on April 1 2020.
The Kenyan government insisted that it would prefer a Kenyan in the role, despite the success of the Guyanese-born, British-raised Collymore. Several other top-ranking multinational executives were in the reckoning but were dropped mostly influenced by the Kenyan government’s stiff stand for a homegrown chief executive
