African leaders called for lifting sanctions on Russian grain and fertilizer exports to revive the Black Sea Grain Initiative to enable food deficit countries in the region to source more food grains
African leaders called for lifting sanctions on Russian grain and fertilizer exports to revive the Black Sea Grain Initiative to enable food deficit countries in the region to source more food grains. The leaders also urged the United Nations to take action to release 200,000 tonnes of Russian fertilizer stuck in European Union ports. Those points were pressed by a spokesperson for South African President Cyril Ramaphosa while addressing the press.
Last month, Russia withdrew from a UN-brokered deal that allowed Ukraine to export grain through the Black Sea. This led to a spike in grain prices that hit hard and affected the poorest countries. Moscow has been demanding guarantees on another agreement concerning its own exports, in particular fertilizers. The African leaders have been pressing on the West to yield to Moscow’s demand to end the impasse. So far it has not met with any success from the Western bloc. Apart from Ramaphosa, the other African leaders negotiating between Moscow and the West include Abdel Fattah al-Sissi (Egypt) and Macky Sall (Senegal).

In recent days, Russia has shelled ports in the Odessa region, which were crucial for grain exports enjoying safe passage under the deal. Egypt, South Africa, and Senegal are part of a diplomatic effort by seven African countries to try to broker an end to hostilities between Kiev and Moscow.
