Ghana emerges as a major exporter of power

Ghana is steadily emerging as an exporter of power in the west Africa sub-region. It generates electricity from hydropower, fossil-fuel and renewable energy.  Over the years, it started exporting generated energy to other countries. Burkina Faso is the latest country to join the list of importers of electricity from Ghana. Togo, Cote d’Ivoire and Benin are the other West African countries that regularly imports electricity from Ghana.

Speaking at the 3rd Ecowas Sustainable Energy Forum in Accra, the Vice President Dr. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia stated that the government proposes to extend its power exports to countries such as Niger and Mali. He added that the exports of power to the west African region contributed to the socio-economic conditions of these countries. Dr. Bawumia, added that Ghana is undertaking grid expansions that would allow further exports to more countries in the sub-region. Ghana is working towards a robust and financially strong power sector to support the ECOWAS regional efforts in the long term he said.t the same time Ghana is committed to its renewable energy portfolio standards and has completed a comprehensive National Renewable Energy Master Plan (REMP).
