The BRICS summit will go ahead as planned, said South Africa. There was speculation that it may be moved to China to overcome the possible legal hurdles around the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the summit. The legal hurdle is borne out of the accusation of the International Criminal Court (ICC)in March of Putin kidnapping Ukrainian children.  An arrest warrant was issued against him.

As South Africa is preparing to host the BRICS summit from August 22-24 in Johannesburg, its foreign minister said that there had been no confirmation of attendance from Putin. The rest of the leaders from China, Brazil, and India have all confirmed to attend. The West has criticized the ambivalent stand of South Africa on the conflict in Ukraine. It may be recalled that in May the US ambassador to South Africa publicly accused the country of allowing the loading of arms or related technologies onto a Russian ship docked at Simon’s Town naval base.

These accusations were denied by President Cyril Ramaphosa. He also instituted an inquiry into the accusation leveled against the country. Analysts opine that the air has still to be cleared about the BRICS meeting, which they maintain would be known in the coming days. One possibility, they opine, would be Putin skipping the meet.
