Rwanda is drafting a “green city,” proposal in the city of Kigali in an area of 2.3 square miles earmarked to efficient factories, sustainable housing and green cars at a cost of $5 billion according to media sources.
The Rwanda Green City Pilot Project covers every environmental concern in a sustainable way. It also has evolved its own “Pillars of Green Urbanism” that can be easily replicated in other cities. The “green city” will be planned in such a way that it will be eco-friendly and has all the infrastructure and services of a city. The plan also includes Electric vehicles, bicycle lanes, biogas, forests, environmental waste treatment to be part of the planned city. It is hope that the project will generate jobs, improve sanitation and public transport access. There are two phases-
The first one is “Cactus Green Park,” a pilot for other urban planning green building projects which has a 410 house development that meets environmental standards. The second is green affordable housing. Green office and commercial buildings are proposed to be included in the future projects
Speaking about the project, the mayor of Kigali,, Pudence Rubingisa said that the Green development will help cope up not only with the climate change issue but also the urbanisation .
