Senegal’s Consulates abroad temporarily closed due to tension

The Senegalese government announced that it was temporarily closing its consulates general abroad following attacks on a number of them. The country is facing tensions at home.

The Senegalese government announced that it was temporarily closing its consulates general abroad following attacks on a number of them. The country is facing tensions at home.

In Milan, the passport and ID card production machines have been destroyed and the consulates will reopen only when material and security conditions improve, according to government sources. This has put a large number of Senegalese abroad into great difficulty, especially those who are seeking consular services such as assistance and passport issuance.

Recently, Senegal experienced its worst unrest in years after opposition politician Ousmane Sonko was sentenced to two years imprisonment in a vice scandal. It makes him ineligible for the 2024 presidential election. The arrest sparked clashes that left at least 16 people dead and caused considerable damage.  Demonstrations were held even abroad.

Both the government and the opposition blamed each other for the violence. The presidential camp cited calls for “insurrection” by Mr. Sonko to escape justice. It denounced the unrest as an attempt to destabilize the state.
