Burundi reaffirmed its neutrality on the conflict in Ukraine saying that “no one can win this war”, during a visit by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Importantly, in February, Burundi abstained from voting on the latest UN General Assembly resolution calling on Russia to withdraw its forces from Ukraine. In all, 22 of the 54 member states of the African Union abstained or took no part in the vote, and two countries – Eritrea and Mali – voted against the motion.
Burundi’s foreign minister Albert Shingiro, said at a joint presser with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov that his country abstained from voting to maintain neutrality to prevent the conflict from spreading to other regions and lamented that no one could win the war.
The Russian foreign minister responded by telling Russia appreciated the stand of Burundi and added that Africa was not adequately attended at the UN Security Council and assured the support of Russia to make that happen.

Lavrov’s Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kouleba visited several African countries in Africa recently, including Ethiopia and Rwanda, last week. Moscow and Kyiv are seeking to increase their respective influence on the African continent. Lavrov has already visited Africa twice since the start of the war in Ukraine at the end of February 2022, on tours of several countries. The second edition of the Russia-Africa summit will be held on July 26-29 in St. Petersburg, Russia, which is billed as an exercise to muster support by Russia for its cause.
