Phasing out the fuel subsidies was the other decision that the president announced in his maiden address. Analysts say that it would hike up the price of refined oil amidst the double-digit inflation, exploding debt, poverty, and unemployment.
The West African country is facing unprecedented challenges, despite its huge oil wealth. With hopes kept high, thousands of citizens attended the swearing-in function in the capital Abuja. His predecessor Muhammadu Buhari in his last address to the most populous nation in Africa recalled the strides Nigeria made during his presidency, which lasted for two terms. But, there are skeptics who observed, his claims were high-pitched and that his term of office was marked by economic instability and violence. The country, they maintain, could have progressed much faster given the large oil resources of the country.
Yet, one has to concede the relatively peaceful manner in which the elections were held in the country recently. Also, he (Buhari) has to be credited with a peaceful transition of power, which is mostly unknown in Africa, where the incumbent head of state tries to be in power by tampering with the Constitution, which generally gives only two terms to an incumbent president. Importantly, two of the main opposition leaders, who contested the election has challenged the verdict on election in a court of law, where pleadings for and against the declared results are going on. Both the opposition leaders were not present at the swearing-in ceremony.

Tinubu was the former governor of Lagos, the economic hub of the country. In his address, he also stressed building on Buhari’s efforts to deliver democratic and demographic dividends to citizens. Newly elected governors also took their oath of office in many Nigerian states on Monday.
