The outgoing Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari, said that the smooth handing over of power in the West African country was an example of a peaceful transition of power to the new administration. He will hand over the power to president-elect Bola Tinubu on 29th May at a function to be attended by representatives of several nations, including India. Mr. Rajnath Singh, Défense Minister of India, will be attending the administration of the oath of office of the new president.
Buhari, in his last address to the nation, claimed that Nigeria has considerably improved in all spheres since he took over in 2015. He reminded the new administration to continue with the task of nation-building while defending his record performance in office in two terms.
Analysts say that the recent presidential elections were relatively peaceful compared to the previous ones, which were marred by heavy violence, looting and arson. But several independent observers, while conceding to that view, said that there were several procedural hiccups during the elections, particularly while compiling and relaying the results through the digital platforms. The two main opposition parties have approached the court for declaring the election results null and void. It may take a while for the final decision to be out. The affected parties have the right to appeal against the decision of the lower court till it is disposed of finally by the Supreme Court.
