The United Nations has asked for a whopping US$7 billion in funding ahead of the upcoming UN Horn of Africa Pledging Conference. The Conference is scheduled to start later this week. The United Nations has asked for a whopping US$7 billion in funding ahead of the upcoming UN Horn of Africa Pledging Conference. The Conference is scheduled to start later this week. The appeal of, the International Rescue Committee along with the UN is to help communities struggling to survive in Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia. They feel that a lot more resources should go into building community resilience, building community infrastructure, and building social resilience for communities themselves to be able to cope with these droughts.
The region is facing the worst drought in 40 years, with more than 43.3 million people in need of assistance. Food insufficiency is also crucial in the region. Malnutrition rates in Somalia doubled. The drought is believed to have destroyed millions of livestock. The UN sources claim that they have received only less than a quarter of the donations they need.

The United States said that it would give US$524 million as additional humanitarian aid for the region to fight the ill effects of climate change. The resources granted would be used for drilling or rehabilitating the boreholes, cash transfers directly into the hands of the populations that are affected, and treatment of children that is severely acutely malnourished. The US $7 billion aid will also evolve new innovative ways to avert future crises in the regions and assist local communities.
