Residents of Sudan’s South Darfur state fear that the ongoing fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces may reignite the conflict. The region has been a battleground between the military and the paramilitary RSF since the conflict began on April 16.

There is no let-up in fighting, while some apprehend that it might be a long drawn-out one.

African tribes in Darfur had long complained of discrimination and rebelled against the government.  This was responded to with a military campaign.   The International Criminal Court later termed the campaign against the government amounted to genocide.

There is also an allegation that the state-backed Arab militias known as the Janjaweed were accused of widespread killings, rapes, and other atrocities. The Janjaweed later evolved into the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group, known as the RSF.
