Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is moving ranks. It has been adjudged as the second fastest growing airport in the latest world cargo ranking for airports. The airport handled more than 250,000 metric tonnes of air cargo in 2018.
According to the Airports Council International (ACI) latest World Airport Traffic Report, JKIA is only behind Rockford, an expansive air cargo hub in the United States. It may be noted that Rockford is the e-commerce freight hub for online retail giant Amazon. JKIA handled more than 342,000 metric tons of air cargo in 2018, marking a 25% growth from 2017. JKIA handles cargoes to and from Europe, Asia, America, China and Australia. There has been remarkable transformation in the operation of JKIA, with the induction of several state-of-the- art equipment to handle cargoes. There is also public-private participation in the running of the airport.
The World Airport Traffic Report also said that world-wide airports handled 8.8 billion passengers, 111.7 million tonnes of cargoes and 99.7 million aircraft movements.
