Evacuation from Sudan amidst pitched battle

In the midst of heavy fighting in Sudan, evacuations are taking place for foreign nationals. In the midst of heavy fighting in Sudan, evacuations are taking place for foreign nationals. Rescue operations for foreign nationals are taking place in various destinations although the main airport at Khartoum, where heavy fighting is taking place between the two warring rebel groups, is mostly inaccessible. Khartoum is reported to be under the control of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that is battling the army. Evacuations are also taking place through the sea, from Port Sudan on the Red Sea, an 850-kilometer drive from Khartoum.

Saudi Arabia evacuated more than 150 people including foreign diplomats and officials from Port Sudan recently, including 91 Saudi citizens and around 66 nationals from 12 other countries, such as  Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Tunisia, Pakistan, India, Bulgaria, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Canada, and Burkina Faso.

The US military, last Sunday sent three Chinook helicopters to evacuate American embassy staff from Khartoum, which was supervised by trained US forces. Over 100 embassy staff were evacuated.  Choppers flew from Djibouti to Ethiopia to Sudan.  There is a strong contingent of US nationals in Sudan.

France also evacuated from Sudan over 100 people on the first French flight out of the country. A second flight of another 100 people was also evacuated subsequently. Meanwhile, the British army has evacuated UK embassy staff and their families in a complex and rapid operation. Turkey took an estimated 600 people by road from two Khartoum districts and the southern city of Wad Madani. The European Union is also trying to evacuate their people from Sudan through a coordinated plan as there are seven EU members who have missions in Sudan.

Other countries which are involved in the evacuations of their nationals are China, India, Japan, South Korea, Lebanon, Iraq, Libya, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.  The fierce fighting mostly in Khartoum and in the region of Darfur has killed over 420 people and wounded 3,700.  A researcher at Amnesty International warned that daily life remained hellish for Sudanese and some foreigners. The Sudanese army and its rival the Rapid Support Forces have accused each other of attacking prisons to set detainees free and plunder houses and factories.
