Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said that peace talks would be held with the OLA, a rebel group active in the country’s largest and most populous region of Oromia, terming the talk as a dire need of the country.

The OLA confirmed Abiy Ahmed’s statements and said that the organization has consistently called for peaceful dialogue as the only viable solution. There is a mediator appointed for the negotiations. But as to whom the mediator is not yet revealed either by the government or OLA sources and the terms of reference of the talks.

The OLA has been fighting the Ethiopian federal government since it split in 2018 with the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF). The OLA’s strength has increased significantly in recent years as people also vowed allegiance to the organization. But experts maintain that OLA is insufficiently organized and armed to pose a real threat to the federal government. There are a few ethnic massacres taking place in the region. The perpetrators of which are not clearly identified. Though the federal government pins down the responsibility for carrying out the massacres on OLA, the group rejects that accusation.
