Asian Origin Ugandans fear a second expulsion

233

Ugandan Government has initiated a probe into the management and status of properties that were left behind in 1972 which has left some Ugandans of Asian origin worried. The members of the Association of Expropriated Properties Owners’ Limited, who are under scrutiny by a taskforce of the Parliamentary Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (Cosase) fear that the current parliamentary probe is likely to result into a second expulsion a repetition of ‘Amin’s history. They allege that the exercise is “targeting individuals” rather than tackling the real problem with expropriated properties.

The association urged Cosase to examine the accountability for the rental income from departed properties since 1993 when repossession window ended, the facts about the people whose properties were compensated and the whereabouts of the Sh800 million that was in International Credit Bank at the time it was closed in 1993.Mr Allibhai pointed out that parliament should also investigate whether the government through Bank of Uganda really compensated former owners
