Halan, an Egyptian technology start-up has announced its plans to start operations in Ethiopia before the end of 2019 after expanding to more cities in Egypt this year. The start-up was founded in November 2017, and operates in around 20 to 25 cities in Egypt and Sudan.

Halan’s app reaches out to underserved communities enabling customers to request motorbike or tuk-tuk rides, or order food or goods for delivery via motorbikes or cargo tricycles. The chief Executive of the company, Mr. Nakhla said that Halan undertakes a few million rides per month out of which almost half a million for food deliveries. Its ride-hailing trips increased by 55 per cent and food deliveries more than quadrupled. The company hopes to become “pan-African” and tap the tremendous growth prospects in the continent. In Egypt, it acts as delivery partner for food chains like McDonald’s, KFC and Pizza Hut.

The start-up has reportedly raised approximately $20 million so far and generated jobs for more than 100 people. Halan is modelled after Gojek, an Indonesian ride-hailing and e-payments company.
