Netflix has plans to expand its operations in Africa, riding on the back of the success of its various shows and series including “Blood and Water”. Netflix has invested €160 million in film content production in Africa since 2016 when the media company started working on the continent. Its focused markets are South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria. Its operations in the continent have created more than 12,000 jobs. Its expansion plans would create more jobs and avenues for entertainment in the continent. South Africa is its major market with more than 170 films, series, and documentaries on show. Its success rides on the back of the huge viewership of Blood and Water. It is contemplating plans to replicate such series and shows in other countries as well to establish a foothold in the expanding market of the continent.
Netflix is steadily expanding its operations outside the US and diversifying its products. Importantly, it has collaborated with UNESCO to finance six short films by young African directors in 2021. Presently, the company is finalizing plans for further entrenching into the global market by developing country-specific films, series, and documentaries.
