As part of a peace process launched in the Tigray region in November last year to end the brutal conflict in the northern Ethiopian region, a 27-member interim regional executive was formed to run the administration. The executive list includes a number of Tigrayan generals and several figures from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
Getachew Reda was appointed by the TPLF as one of its top leaders to head the region’s interim government under the November 2 peace agreement signed in Pretoria, which was endorsed by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. He will be assisted by General Tadesse Worede, head of the Tigray forces during the conflict. The latter is appointed vice president of the region, in charge of Peace and Security.

The international community was concerned about the war that upset the life of millions in the Tigray region. The war-like situation caused the deaths of so many and the dislocation of millions. The world community expects peace to return to the region at the earliest. The US and EU said that they would monitor the peace process returning to the region and called on both sides to maintain utmost restraint. The turf war between the Federal government and TPLF came into effect when Abiy Ahmed came to power in 2018. The TPLF leaders maintain that he tried to marginalize them.
