In an important announcement while in Ghana, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris said that the US would evolve a project of   US$1 billion aimed at improving women’s economic empowerment in Africa. Before leaving Ghana, Harris said that the project would be funded by the private sector. This,  she said,  before winding up her three-day visit to the country to proceed to Tanzania.

Importantly, the US Vice President announced several aid packages, including US$139 million for economic and cultural development in Ghana. She also committed a US $100 million investment in coastal West African countries facing the risk of jihadist violence, a spillover from the Sahel region. Apart from these, the African Women’s Economic Empowerment Initiative, aimed at bridging the digital gender gap, has an allocation of nearly US$400 million from the private sector. This is in addition to the more than US$500 million allocation for supporting women’s economic empowerment in Africa.
