U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris praised Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo for upholding democratic principles and rule of law. Apart from Ghana, Harris will visit Tanzania and Zambia. The visits are part of a concerted effort to enhance the U.S. outreach in Africa. It is also meant to counterbalance the growing power of China and Russia in Africa, which is growing at a phenomenal pace in recent times.
Upon arrival in Ghana, the US Vice President was received by the Ghanaian President. Importantly, Kamala Harris promised increased investments in Ghana and announced US$100 million in U.S. aid to the region. Akufo-Addo responded by saying that countries like Ghana, which are bearing the brunt of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the fallout of the Russian-Ukraine war needed more accommodation from the US to stem the inflation and non -availability of essential goods. He also flagged the spread of terrorism across West Africa and called for effective measures to contain them.

In a joint press conference, Akufo-Addo highlighted terrorism, which is causing a lot of damage to the region and also the reported presence of Russian mercenaries. About Ghana’s relationship with China, he said that Ghana has a good relationship with several countries; but they did not get in the way of any relationship with other countries, adding that with the US, his country has a long and strong relationship, which could be traced to some 70 years ago. Some of the grants announced by Kamala Harris may have to get congressional approval. The US also is likely to send an advisor to Ghana to help the country to set right its deep debt burden.
