The World Bank will open an office in Seychelles by the end of 2023, stated the bank’s country director after meeting with Seychelles’ President Wavel Ramkalawan. This initiative would help the bank to keep a smoother dialogue with Seychelles and other stakeholders in the region.
The World Bank will open an office in Seychelles by the end of 2023, stated the bank’s country director after meeting with Seychelles’ President Wavel Ramkalawan. This initiative would help the bank to keep a smoother dialogue with Seychelles and other stakeholders in the region.
One of the main objectives of this mission in Seychelles is to refine the country’s partnership framework which governs the work it executes in the country. The other objective is to follow up on the earlier activities in which the bank has been involved which include issues of social protection, particularly relating to teenage pregnancy and how to keep children in school.
The World Bank Group is an international partnership that works for sustainable development that reduces poverty and builds shared prosperity. The bank provides loans and grants to the governments of low- and middle-income countries for the purpose of pursuing capital projects It has 189 member countries and provides financial and technical assistance.

The bank finds it pertinent to work particularly with COVID where many children dropped out of school and the question is how to bring them back. The World Bank is looking at policies to make it easier for children to go back to school. And also the issue of the age of consent for sexual intercourse in Seychelles is 15 years but the age for access to contraceptives is 18.
Other focus areas included agriculture and food production, tourism, and fisheries. The bank has been assisting Seychelles with its welfare reform and intends to involve in a holistic manner not just through financial means but also through analytics and technical assistance. The current three-year project has as its objective to modernise the system, thus ensuring targeted and coordinated measures for those really in need.
