US First Lady Jill Biden has arrived in Kenya to hold parleys with the state administration. Her mission is basically to promote programmes aimed at women and children, as countries including Namibia and Kenya along with other countries in the Horn of Africa are reeling under pressure emanating from an inclement climate of draught interspersed with floods
US First Lady Jill Biden has arrived in Kenya to hold parleys with the state administration. Her mission is basically to promote programmes aimed at women and children, as countries including Namibia and Kenya along with other countries in the Horn of Africa are reeling under pressure emanating from an inclement climate of drought interspersed with floods.
The past five rainy seasons have all been poor. That led to millions of livestock dying as well as the destruction of crops. The prediction is that the next rainy season will be poor too, pushing 22 million people in the Horn of Africa into poverty and destitution. Women and children are going to bear the brunt of these vagaries of nature.

Kenya has a rare affinity with the US, a sort of emotional one. Former Democratic party President Barack Obama’s father was a Kenyan and he visited that county when he was a Senator in 2006 and as president in 2015. Jill Biden’s tour is mostly aimed at deepening American ties with Africa. The region has become a diplomatic battleground since Russia invaded Ukraine last year. The US has to rework its diplomatic relations with Africa, as a number of countries in Africa abstained from voting for a UN resolution demanding immediate Russian withdrawal from Ukraine when the war broke out more than a year ago.
