Over the past three years, Malawi’s trade balance with India, the country’s third largest export market, has shown improvement partly due to the rising exports of Pigeon peas to India. Malawi and India signed a memorandum of understanding for exporting 50 000 metric tonnes of pigeon peas from Malawi every year to India for the next five years, in June 2021. The export of Pigeon peas has improved Malawi’s export basket to India and narrowed the trade deficit. Malawi’s exports to India in 2022 rose to $100.69 million. In fact, the trade gap between the two countries narrowed from $153.3 million in 2020 to $143.89 million representing 64 percent.

The principal exports to India from Malawi are primarily agricultural products, mainly dried leguminous vegetables, including pigeon peas or unprocessed toor dal, chickpeas, and other related pulses. Since August 2017, after the change in the import policy of India, dried leguminous vegetables, and toor dal which used to be the major items of export from Malawi to India fell. However, due to a favorable import policy of the Indian government, Pigeon pea exports rose since 2018, and helped both in foreign exchange earnings and also farmers, who traditionally have been growing pigeon peas for the Indian market.
