Libyans celebrated the 12th anniversary of their 2011 uprising as citizens in several cities took to the streets to commemorate the day, carrying national flags and lights followed by music festivals, dances, and singing. Celebrations in Tripoli were also high-pitched despite the political churning that is happening in the country.
The anniversary of the uprising comes amid the continued political stalemate between the two governments ruling the country under two different presidents and capital cities. The county is split into two rival administrations in the chaos that followed the uprising that happened in 2011. Both administrations are backed by militias and foreign governments, compounding the problems.
The need for dividing the country is being felt and several analysts opine that it is the only solution to end the crisis, which has taken a heavy toll on the lives of the citizens and the economic well-being of the oil-rich northern African country. The UN special envoy for Libya warned at the end of last year of the consequences of the ongoing turmoil and urged influential nations to pressure Libya’s rival leaders to urgently finalize the constitutional framework for holding elections.
